On October 31, 2021, we quietly marked 25 years of RogerLe.com. No press release. No champagne. Just a short note to long-time customers and a long, slow coffee.
Some numbers
- 25 years in continuous operation.
- Servers on four continents.
- Thousands of websites hosted, dozens of them since 1998.
- Three major platform rewrites (Perl → PHP → custom stack).
- One team. Still two founders. Still the same two founders.
What's changed
Dial-up to fiber. Static HTML to dynamic everything. Shared hosting to cloud to containers to functions and back again. Every few years the industry finds a new acronym and decides everything will be different now.
What hasn't
Websites still need to be online. Mail still needs to be delivered. When something breaks at 2am, a human still needs to pick up the phone. The fundamentals are remarkably, stubbornly, reassuringly the same as they were in 1996.
“ Thirty is just a rounder version of twenty-five.
